Your Catches: The Rare Greenback Cutthroat

This is a greenback cutthroat that I caught at Sandbeach Lake on the Wild Basin Trailhead in Estes Park, CO in June 2009. Elevation 10,283, caught on olive or copper beadhead #16 with a barbless hook.

Brown trout caught in Bennet Spring state park Lebanon MO, March 2009. It was caught late in the day just before sundown. On a 1/64 oz white on white mini jig. 1.5lb 8x tippet on a Browning Silaflex fiberglass rod.

Both looked like really nice fishing spots. I saw a piece on Yellowstone last year that looked really enticing.

Thanks all! The Greenbacks were spawning that June and they were hidden under a 20ft tall snowpack that was washed out underneathe so the fish would hide in the shade then pop out in the sun. The larger fish would take cover in the weeds and I have some photos where you can see that the stream was only about 1 to 2 ft wide at times. It was an amazing week up there camping on that lake. The 8.8 mile backpack hike takes it out of you, but once you’re there… it’s all worth it.

8.8 miles… wow, I guess catching a greenback makes it even more worthwhile. Seeing as how rare they are.
