I do a lot of walleye fishing on Onieda Lake NY. I can usually catch them all year. The most difficult month is September. In the Spring I use Black and Orange Jigs during the Day in about 10-20 ft and top water jerk baits at night shallow. Mid summer I use jigs but have most luck casting willow blades and retrieving them just above the weeds in 10-15 ft. The walleyes will come out for them even on a sunny day. Late summer, Jigging in 30-40ft or trolling is about the only way to get them. In the fall I use top water thundersticks and rapalas right at dark is usually peak but you can get them all night long in 2-6 ft of water. I usually do this until ice. Through the ice, tip ups work OK but i prefer using a decent size jigging spoon when I find them.

Dennis on his catch:

I caught this 25″ walleye in about 3′ of water in late November of 2009. I got it just after dark on a thunderstick Jr. I caught it near the mouth of a marina from my boat. I was slowly drifting to cover more area. The other 2 I caught were also over 20″. It was about 25 degrees out that night.

Dennis on his catch:

I caught this 34″ northern pike in 3′ of water in late November 2009, about an hour after dark while Walleye fishing on a Jr thunderstick. It was a good night. We threw many walleyes back. The shad were in heavy. This bad boy had 32 medium size shad in its belly. I chose not to send that photo. I saved a lot of perch getting him out of the lake. A couple night later my buddy got a 33″ one in the same spot.
