I do a lot of walleye fishing on Onieda Lake NY. I can usually catch them all year. The most difficult month is September. In the Spring I use Black and Orange Jigs during the Day in about 10-20 ft and top water jerk baits at night shallow. Mid summer I use jigs but have most luck casting willow blades and retrieving them just above the weeds in 10-15 ft. The walleyes will come out for them even on a sunny day. Late summer, Jigging in 30-40ft or trolling is about the only way to get them. In the fall I use top water thundersticks and rapalas right at dark is usually peak but you can get them all night long in 2-6 ft of water. I usually do this until ice. Through the ice, tip ups work OK but i prefer using a decent size jigging spoon when I find them.

I picked up this 13″ crappie on Oneida Lake while drifting for walleyes. I was switching back and forth casting a jig and casting a silver willow blade over the weeds. This one hit the spinner. I got 2 walleyes on the spinner and 4 walleyes jigging.

Fishing the weeds has been hot on Oneida. we boated 13 pickerel, 7 large mouths, 1 Northern several perch and sunfish and 8 walleyes. We’re getting them drifting from short weeds into thick in 12-14′ of water. Casting jigs then switching to casting willow blades when the weeds get thicker. We’re getting the walleyes both ways.

Its not uncommon to catch yellow perch jigging for walleyes on Oneida. This 13 inch perch hit a 1/2 ounce bucktail jig in 20 ft of water. Right now we are having one of the biggest May Fly hatches I’ve seem in years. The Walleyes are still biting light but were still limiting every time out.

I always keep a pack or jar of Gulp brand minnows. They look like the real deal. I stopped and fished in the marina after catching my walleye limit. I cast it with a bobber about 18″ down and twitch it near the dock posts and Lilly pads. I got between 6 and 8 of these in a 1/2 hour 4 days in a row. All were between 10-13 inches.

Many people call these silver bass. They fillet real nice. They are a mild tasting fish you just need to cut the blood line out of the tail. They usually hang out in deep water and it’s common to catch them with the walleyes. They average 12-18″ in size.
